Abstract

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating condition, and often the person experiencing this has difficulty talking about his/her thoughts and feelings. The use of visual arts and poetry as a treatment for PTSD can be viable in bridging the communication with the person suffering this condition in a nonthreatening way. Thoughts and feelings can be depicted in images and symbols that do not directly present the traumatic experience, thus, minimizing its harrowing effects. This chapter presents various considerations for treatment in the use of these modalities as interventions for PTSD. Among these considerations are the (1) therapeutic elements of creative arts psychotherapy, (2) use of these modalities in assessment and treatment, and (3) practice and procedure, which include (a) considerations in designing a program for groups and (b) suggested intervention activities using visual arts and poetry.
